Ai‘s Arrest: CCP Power Struggle?

Forty days after the arrest of artist Ai Weiwei,
his wife Lu Qing was allowed to visit him
for the first time on May 15 . Analysts say
authorities allowed Ai to see his family
due to international pressure
and power struggle inside the CCP’s
(Chinese Communist Party) top circle.

Rights lawyer Liu Xioayuan revealed the news
of Ai’s family visit via Twitter.

Ai’s wife Lu described the visit to Liu Xiaoyuan.

Liu Xiaoyuan: “The meeting did not take place
at a detention center; Ai was not hand-cuffed,
nor was he wearing detainee’s clothing.
Lu Qing said Ai’s health seemed OK.
In my analysis, Ai might be put on house arrest.”

Lu Qing said to Associated Press
that she was taken to an undisclosed location
to meet with Ai for 20 minutes.
Ai seemed conflicted, contained and tense.
But he said his health was fine,
and was able to access medical services.

The AP report said Lu saw redness in Ai’s eyes
(indicating that he had been crying).
Without freedom to express himself,
Ai was not behaving naturally with his wife.

Lu’s visit with Ai was monitored and someone
was there recording their conversation.
Ai did not say anything about his case.

After Ai Weiwei’s disappearance on April 3,
the news spread quickly around the world.
Hu Ping, editor of Beijing’s Spring magazine,
said that the CCP did not expect this reaction.

Hu Ping: “Ai’s arrest has to do with power conflict
in the top circle. This has led to strong reactions
from various circles. The CCP circle
does not have agreement on this,
and some are not convinced [that this is right.]”

Till now, Ai’s case still has not been filed legally.
Ai’s sister Gao Ge said the family only wishes
that authorities follow legal procedures,
allowing the case to be dealt with legally.
But Ai’s family has not received any notices,
nor can they seek legal assistance.

Hu Ping: “This has lasted for over 40 days.
Authorities are violating legal procedures.”

Chinese Foreign Affairs Minister Jiang Yu
has been questioned by reporters
about Ai’s disappearance.
Jiang replied: “I cannot comment on this case,
since it is still being investigated.”
