Four Party Papers, One Face

Bloggers discover that four newspapers, Guangming
People’s Daily, Economic Times, and PLA Daily,
had identical front page three days in a roll.
Netizen said one paper is enough.
Experts believe this is inevitable
when press freedom is non-existent.

The Onion had an article showing
People’s Daily, Guangming and Economic Times
having the same front page. Bloggers added
one more paper, PLA Daily, to the list.
Moreover, now identical front-page
was carried in all four papers for three days in a roll.

For those three days, all of these four papers
had similar front-page layout and photos,
exept that PLA Daily’s layout was slightly different,
but the content was the same.

Gao Yu, a media expert:
“The Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP)
Propaganda Department has daily notice,
with strict requirements on what news to put
on the front page, on what positions. This is why
you see the same face on all CCP’s papers.
This is common in China.”

Gao said other papers are basically the same.

Gao: “Many market-oriented papers are the same.
Their local news is different, but major news and
national news follow the same identical content.
China does not have press freedom,
and the result is identical news content.”

Wall Street Journal (WSJ) pointed out
that on March 14, People’s Daily had
a front-page report on the 4th People’s Congress.
The page was a copy of last year’s front page,
with the only change of 3rd to the 4th Congress.
Layout and photos were identical.

WSJ called this “the laziest cut-and-paste job
in the history of journalism.”
Behind it is the tight media control by the CCP.
To avoid saying the wrong words and be punished,
newspaper staff simply resorts to copying.

Bloggers said this is a perfect Chinese characteristic.
The CCP forces work units to subscribe to
these papers – this is simply a waste of money.
If media freedom is allowed, no one will buy them.

Gao said while party papers make easy money,
other papers are put in difficult positions.

Gao: “Other metropolitan papers face tough times.
They have to consider the market in order to survive,
but they have evil bosses at the top, plus
the Propaganda Department and the Press Bureau.
They require the papers to act as their PR tool.

In addition to newspapers, some official websites
also have shockingly identical “annual reports.”
Netizen revealed that the Social Security ministry
had the same 2010 annual report as the 2009 report,
even the dates were unchanged!

Bloggers said China does not have real media,
only CCP’s parrots.
