China’s Antibiotic Abuses in Livestock

Hong Kong’s Ming Pao reported of serious abuse
of antibiotics in raising livestock, near 10 tons/year in China.
Experts pointed out that once the residue
from antibiotics enters into the human bodies,
it may cultivate bacteria with super resistance to antibiotics.
With antibiotics’ abuse people will face a crisis
that no drugs would be helpful to human beings.

In that report, China Business quoted remarks
from professor XiaoYonghong, director
of Antibiotic Resistance Monitoring Network,
that out of 210,000 tons of antibiotics produced,
97,000 tons are used in raising livestock every year.
For example, to lift profit fish farmers use antibiotics
to raise fish from high density breeding and polluted
water, which allows the fish to survive and be sold.

Academician Zhong Nanshan also said:
“The consequences are very serious.”
Professor Xiao Yonghong from
the Zhejiang University Medical Center pointed out
that clenbuterol can harm a small group of people,
but abusing antibiotics can endanger all of humanity.

Excessive amount of antibiotics may not kill,
but it may help bacteria to become super resistant
to drugs. If a residue of antibiotics is present in
the human body, super bacteria may grow in it.
Then even if humans do not consume such meat,
the super bacteria can spread to human beings,
through the food chain and the natural environment.

Prof. Xiao also said that their investigation
is very difficult; eople from different units are not
willing to share due to privacy or confidentiality.

A reporter was surprised by the following remark
from Mr. Wan in the breeding industry: “Animals
take in far more antibiotics than clenbuterol. From
the many pharmaceutical companies no one cares.”
The manager of a meat processing company told
the media privately, “Seafood is probably better,
as freshwater fish is far more contaminated
due to breeding density,” after which he laughed
and said, “If you have a cold, you don’t need to take
antibiotics, just eat a few crabs and it will do.”
Insiders in the breeding industry estimated that over
80% of freshwater breeding sites are being polluted,
and antibiotics are the most serious offenders.
According to the report, the State Food and Drug Administration statistics
show that China’s annual use of antibiotics is 138 grams per capita,
10 times that of the American usage. However, the animals
take in far more than human beings.
Xiao also said, “In 2006, antibiotics production was 210,000 tons.”
But now, it probably reaches 400,000 tons.

Xiao Yonghong pointed out, “Misusing antibiotics,
human beings will face a crisis of no helpful drugs.”
Vice President Lu Sheng of Bejing Biotechnology
also believes that long term buildup of
antibiotics residue will leave us with no usable drugs.
