Family of Ai Weiwei Call for Justice

Two weeks after Ai Weiwei’s disappearance, Chinese
official media began to criticize Ai. The family of Ai
said they chose to be silent, but requested the authority
to follow due legal procedures in handling Ai’s case.
On the other hand, the action of Beijing artists
to support Ai Weiwei was impeded by police.

It has been 12 days since Ai Weiwei disappeared
in Beijing Airport on Apr. 3. Hong Kong’s Ta Kung Pao
and Wen Wei Po criticized Ai on Apr. 14 for tax evasion,
bigamy and dissemination of pornographic materials,
claiming Ai has “admitted” the foregoing crimes.

Ai’s sister, Gao Ge, said the authorities never talked to
Ai’s family members but unilaterally smeared Ai.
Ai’s family had no other choices but remained silent.

Gao Ge: “All the accusations of Ai Weiwei on media
were not officially conducted. We did not receive any
notice from the authorities or any related departments
such as the Public Security Bureau. So, we have to
remain silent now. We request that the government
follow legal procedures in handling Ai Weiwei’s case."

As for media’s accusation of Ai for financial frauds,
Lu Qing, legal contact of Ai Weiwei’s company, said,
the taxation office itself violated the law by confiscating
the accounting documents of the company.

Lu Qing: “On Apr. 8, they took away all the accounting
documents of this company. On Apr. 12, they summoned
me as a legal contact, interrogated me with recording.
They asked me to provide them with related information,
but I was not able to, since they had taken everything."

Liu Yanping, an assistant in Ai’s workshop, said
the accountant of the company disappeared 7 days ago.
The authorities repeatedly invited Ai to be a local member
of the Chinese political consultative committee,
but were turned down by Ai.

Liu: “The day before his disappearance, he told me
in person that the authorities asked him several times
to take the foregoing position, but he declined."

Ai Weiwei is one of the designers for the Beijing Olympic
stadium. He is highly regarded in China’s art circle.
A group of Beijing artists planed to carry out a group
sun-tanning activity called “An Action”, requesting
the release of Ai Weiwei, but the police intercepted
the info and arrested two artists Wang Jun and Wen Jie.
Their art salons were also ransacked by the police.

The disappearance of Ai Weiwei sparked wide attention
throughout the world.

Bei Ling, a Chinese poet exiling in Europe drafted an
open letter to Premier Wen Jiabao and circulated it
among European countries for signature. The letter
said, if Ai were arrested, Wen will be held responsible.
Former Czech Republic president Javier first signed it.

German political circle also voiced to support Ai.
The German Bild interviewed several major politicians:

German Foreign Minister Westerwelle said, The rights
for free speech and art expression are precious.
Germany has requested China to clarify this incident.

Sigmar Gabriel, chairman of the Social Democratic
Party of Germany pointed out, The great Chinese people
are in the economic, cultural and political changes.
Germany is a friend and partner of China, so when
despots and injustice are jeopardizing the changes,
Germany should not remain silent.
