China’s Varyag “Only Symbolic”

Chinese official media recently reported that
China purchased from Ukraine the Varyag aircraft
carrier of the former Soviet Union (USSR),
which has been renovated for 10 years.
Military experts pointed out that Varyag
will be used for training.
It is more symbolic, and far from compatible with
it’s U.S. opponents’ aircraft carrier battle group.
This buy ironically comes after
Beijing authorities’ promotion of “peaceful rising".

Official Global Network recently published the latest
pictures of Varyag parking at Dalian. On April 6,
Xinhua reposted part of the pictures, entitled
“Sailing ship is about to launch out, rounding
a 7-decade dream of Chinese aircraft carrier.”
This is the first report of China’s official media
on the first aircraft carrier in China.

According to reports, the carrier will be named
“Shi Lang", commemorating the naval commander
Shi Lang in Qing Dynasty who recovered Taiwan.

Radio France Internationale quoted experts’
analysis to point out that the Chinese army
only bought the aircraft carrier because it’s
neighboring countries, such as India and Thailand
all have aircraft carriers.

China’s first aircraft carrier experienced problems
in the construction process. Varyag construction
started in 1985 by the former USSR.
But USSR collapsed in 1991
and the construction of Varyag was also discontinued.

In 1998, Chuanglu tourism and entertainment
company in Macau purchased Varyag
for USD20 million and intended to transform it
into offshore casinos. It was removed in March 2002
and hauled to the Port of Dalian.

According to Russian media reports, in order to
prevent the Chinese from using the carrier
for military purposes, by Russia’s request,
before giving Varyag to China, Ukraine cut
and took away power and weapons equipment,
some of which were even directly destroyed.

Varyag has a displacement of 67,000 tons,
it is 302 meters long, and is far smaller than U.S.’s
nuclear-powered aircraft carrier George Washington
residing in Japan. The April issue of Canada’s
Hanhe Defense Review magazine said that
the converted Varyag will enter sea trials this year.
But Reuters said, Varyag still needs years
to form combating capabilities.

South Korean newspaper Korea Daily said on Apr 8,
when China’s first aircraft carrier will be in service,
China’s neighboring countries will be “frantic".
The most concerned country would be the U.S.
This will affect military balance in Northeast Asia,
including South Korea and Japan.

Huang Dong, Macau military commentator said:
“In fact, it is not so terrible, as it is just a training and
testing aircraft carrier, rather than a fighting one.
Its future model is 83, meaning that it is the third
one in 81, 82, 83 training ships.
The major fighting aircraft carriers
will be two 048-model ones made in China."

Deutsche Welle quoted military experts as saying,
at present China’s aircraft carrier is only symbolic.
China still has decades to go to truly create
and effectively use combat aircraft carriers,.

Chinese Communist Party (CCP) leadership has
had a long debates on whether
it is necessary to develop aircraft carriers.

Ma Dingsheng, Hong Kong military commentator:
“Some said it will be used to fight with Taiwan,
with Diaoyu Islands, with Nansha. If there really is
a battle, these places are very close to China,
and army aircrafts are enough. It is very arrogant
to contend U.S. for hegemony with aircraft carriers."

In March 2009, the CCP’s Defense Minister
Liang Guanglie met with Japan’s defense minister
and said for the first time that China is the only one
with no aircraft carriers among major powers,
and it can’t be always like this.

Li Xiaobing, Director of Western Pacific Research
Institute, University of Central Oklahoma, said:
“China’s recent domestic developments, especially
any crisis in coastal areas, or the so-called limited
war will bring to China very large damage. Therefore,
expanding the war to the coast, off the coast, is so
that future conflicts will not occur in mainland China.
So this is a very important strategic shift."

Beijing economist Mao Yushi said in a blog article:
“Do not use my taxes to build an aircraft carrier.”
He stressed that this will lead to national waste
and will cause an arms race.

Haiming, a Chinese lawyer in New York also quoted
in his blog sayings of his American colleagues,
”Varyag is Ukraine’s ‘junk’ picked up by China,
after repainting, it only has a glossy surface.”

Outside analysts pointed out that the major purpose
of communist China to build aircraft carriers
is not only to expand the sphere of influence
in the Asia Pacific region, but also to inspire
the people’s nationalist sentiments, whitewashing
the corrupt communist regime, while trying to shift
increasingly intensifying domestic social crises.
