A Story About a Tenacious Old Man Li Shengzhao

Someone said, today’s China is an oblivious country.
However, there is a group of people refusing to forget.
Mr Li Shengzhao, an old man from Sichuan Province,
is one of them.
He was confined to prison for 20 years of his
most precious time as a youth.
After jail, he had continued his search for the historical truth,
which is denied by the Chinese Communist Party Authorities.
When he was trialled in court he said,
“I am not a defendantbut rather a plaintiff.
I am suing the crime of 10 million people dying of hunger
in the Sichuan Province area."
5pm of November 11, the old man died of cerebral
apoplexy when he was the ripe old age of 83.
The tenacious old man, imprinted with the scar of the Great
Famine, is again highlighted for his unusual personal story.

The saying goes, “The more resistance causes more suppression,
the more suppression triggers stronger resistance".
This expression truly describes Mr Li Shengzhao’s
lifetime of experience.
He is entitled to the citizenship “Chinese Spine", “the Conscience
of China", “Mad Man" and so on, by various people, though
he called himself “a tenacious old man".

May of last year, Southern People’s Weekly
published an article titled “A Tenacious Appealer
for the Great Famine", introducing Mr Li Shengzhao.

The Great Famine took place in the middle of the last century,
spanning 50 years since its demise.

When looking back on his lifetime, Mr Li said, he himself
has never had a depressed feeling,
In 1957, when Mr Li was a college student of
Economics Department of Sichuan University,
he was identified as a “Extreme Rightist" due to his
statement that Stalin was a feudal tyrant during
his Speech “Spring" Movement.

He was escorted to his hometown only to then
become an appealer for the Great Famine.

Peng Mutao, ex-secretary of the Industry Bureau of Chengdu
Municipal Government of Sichuan Province says,
“Mao Zedong launched the Rectification Movement in 1957,
and he (Li) gave some comments, which now prove correct.
He was studying economics in College. According to the principles
of economics, he advised the production should be instructed
by the common economic rules,
as well as some comments about the Soviet Union.
It was at this moment that he became identified as a rightist."

In 1958, Li Shengzhao had witnessed in Dechang County
of Sichuan Province,
producing steel and iron had imposed upon all local labour forces
and consumed all of the trees.
He also saw a little girl crying on the road side
due to extreme hunger.
In 1961 when he was escorted to his hometown by train,
he heard a lot of news about people dying of hunger.

Therefore, once back home, he conducted his own investigation
in to the many rural farm production villages.
He wrote three reports.

As a rightist, Li knew the dangers of sending out such letters,
describing the real situation in rural areas.
However, he transcribed the reports repeatedly, sending
them to local and central governments via mail.

He received a reply from Deng Zihui, Deputy Premier of
State Council,
stating that the letter and reports had been transferred to Li Jingquan,
the CCP head of Southwest China.
However, the reply later became Li’s Shengzhao’s
unfortunate prison sentence.

In March of 1962, Li Shengzhao was sentenced to re-education.
In September 1964, he was officially arrested.

He was initially sentenced to a jail term of 15 years.
Li Shengzhao insisted on appealing this, which
later became an even harsher punishment.
He was eventually sentenced to a jail term of 20 years.

With handcuffs and 14 kilogram shackles, Li was confined
to a small cell for a total of 7 years.
During his confinement he wrote the words,
“I appeal for the people, but am looked upon as a fool.
I show concern for the people and questioned the
government, yet am punished as a criminal.
I can sacrifice myself and die in the wild,
but the uprightness will forever remain in this world."

Li’s fellow sufferer Liu Guangze says, “During the past decade,
his brain is not so good, a result I feel coming
from his seven and a half years’ confinement
in a small prison cell with nothing but handcuffs and shackles.
This is beyond all words.
When he was finally released in 1973,
his mental state gradually worsened, he could
barely speak a clear word.
All of these sufferings are difficult to describe yet they are
all the misdeeds of CCP."

In 1980 at the age of 50, he was redeemed with fame.
From that time on did his life then truly start.
He worked for the country for the first time,
and fell in love for the first time.
However, he could not forget the scars left by the nation.

Peng Mutao says, “He insisted on what he thinks was right
without compromise, he even suffered a lot for his insistence.
Many of us were his fellow sufferers,
supported him and admired him.
I also did him a favour by introducing Ms Xie
to make a TV documentary of him."

30 year after his time in prison, he repeatedly requested the
return of his confiscated letters and reports
again and again, but to no avail.

Most of his past fellow students were absent-minded and did not
really understand Li Shengzhao, saying they were
not interested in his topics and stories.

For them, to live a secure retirement life was the best choice.
Even his wife could not understand his actions.
She did not know what he pursued nor why he spent so
much of his time, effort and
money investigating these past things.

But, Mr Li Shengzhao did not care to others’ views. He said,
he was determined to be a protester!
Most of his lifetime he silently wrote something on his desk.

He told his wife, after my death,
these texts cannot be thrown away.
He believes someone will look for these texts,

which reflect a nation’s history embedded with his personal life,
and his personal rebellion during his lifetime.
