China’s Media Cryptically Supported Wang Gongquan on Micro-Blogs While He is Under Criminal Detention

Wang Gongquan, a well-known investor in China,
was arrested by Beijing police and charged with disturbing public order.
The party’s series of crackdown activities on
freedom of speech caused a wide range of protests domestically and internationally.
After Wang was arrested, quite a few media outlets
in China cryptically supported him by reprinting the past positive reports in their official micro-blogs.

On September 13, more than 20 Beijing police searched
Wang Gongquan’s house and confiscated his computer,
two photo frames, and a few citizen metals.

On the same night, Wang Gongquan was arrested
on charges of disturbing public order.

Wang Gongquan, 52-years old, is a well-known
entrepreneur and a venture capitalist.
He is the former chief executive officer of
Wan Tong Groups and also a partner and founder of CDH venture investment fund.
In recent years, Wang Gongquan has been concerned
with the growth of China’s citizen societies,
and kept a close relationship with active
human right activists.
He is a member the Union of Citizens, which was
founded by legislation scholar Xu Zhiyong.

After Wang Gongquan’s criminal detention, Liu Suli,
CEO of Bejing Wangsheng Book Garden, Guo Yunshan,
founder of Transition Institute, and Xiao Shu, publicized
an emergency declaration reprimanding the charge against Mr. Wang.

Zhang Zanning, law professor from Northeastern
University in China: “Wang is a very rational person and
it’s absolutely impossible for him to conduct
anything extreme.
The charge of ‘disturbing public order’ against him
is very ridiculous.
If the authorities are out to condemn Mr. Wang,
they can always trump up a charge.”

As reported by www.epochtimes.com, the news
of Mr.Wang’s detention also brought attention from domestic media in China.
Quite a few media in China voiced support for Mr. Wang
by reprinting the past positive reports about him
in their official micro-blogs, supporting Mr. Wang
in an indirect way.

The article from caixin.com says that
Wang is a very successful business man,
but Wang values his identity as a citizen even more.

The micro-blog reviewed the article about how Wang
visited “illegal prisons” in Beijing during
the night hours and participated in the human rights
activity regarding the Qian Yunhui Case.

The China Business micro-blog listed the five principles
that Wang Gongquan follows as a business man.
The first one is that Mr. Wang would never join
an organization of the ruling party (the Chinese Communist Party, or CCP).

The China Entrepreneur micro-blog stated that Wang
Gongquan is not willing to be subservient to the party.
He makes earnest efforts to promote public welfare
and is concerned about the interests of groups in disadvantage in China.

In recent months, the authorities have escalated
the suppression of the New Citizens Movement in China promoted by Xu Zhiyong.
The crackdown on public opinions is even more severe.
A lot of activists have been summoned or arrested.
Recently, the party’s Supreme Court and procuratorate
even declared that the publisher for any online information
being clicked on 5,000 times or being forwarded 500 times
will possibly face the charge of crime of defamation.
This interpretation of the law has caused uproar
domestically and internationally.

Zhang Jian, researcher of China’s issues: “This law is to warn
China’s intellectual elites and celebrities to follow the party’s steps closely.
If you surpass the line, the bottom line that the party
has drawn for you, everything you own will be deprived from you.”

Wang Gongquan used to have more than 1,300 thousand
fans in his sina micro-blog account.
However, the authorities suspended his account and
listed “Wang Gongquan” as a sensitive word.

Gao Yu, medium professional and former reporter of
Xinhua News Agency: “The party’s intention is very clear.
If you support constitutionalism, what happened
to Wang Gongquan is the lesson you should learn.”

In addition, last week Hangzhong police suspected
that Zhuang Daohe, professor of Zhejiang University
and scholar of legislation, had participated
in the “New Citizen Movement.”
Zhaung was interrogated for 8 hours.

Another online activist Wu Bin was detained on
charges of spreading rumors.

Beijing Lawyer Jiang Tianyong: ”It’s absolutely impossible
that the party would take the initiative to give up its power.
Only the growing power of citizens can build up the capital
needed to play the game with the party, and can we imagine a possible change to the situation.”

As reported by Radio France International,
a couple of days ago,
Wang Gongquan held his daughter’s wedding and
Pan Shiyi and other executives of Wan Tong Groups came to congratulate him.
Later, Pan Shiyi posted the wedding pictures online
and wrote, “Gongquan married her daughter off, and please take care.”
Ren Zhiqiang, VIP user of micro-blog, also posted lines
saying “where are you, Gongquan?”
