Diaoyu Islands Activists Welcomed Back to Hong Kong

On August 22, seven activists went to Diaoyu Islands
to proclaim that their sovereignty be returned to Hong Kong.
Hong Kong people and mainland
tourists flocked to welcome them.
However, the Hong Kong Government and the Chinese
Communist Party (CCP) had no representatives present.

At 2pm, a fishing vessel attached with a five-star red flag
and a flag of the Republic of China arrived in Hong Kong.
The vessel was displaying banners.

“Japan, get out of the Diaoyu Island”.
“Japan must apologize and compensate".

Hong Kong’s Action Committee for Defending
Diaoyu Islands held a welcoming ceremony at the pier.
Local residents carried champagne and flowers to celebrate.

Crowds on the scene shouted and applauded
upon seeing the vessel’s approach.
Some expressed discontent with the CCP
failing to have fully assisted on the issue.

China’s netizens commented on the official attitude
towards the civil campaign in defending the Diaoyu Islands.
The CCP authorities are on guard, but also
want to utilize and manipulate the civil campaign.
The only thing the regime failed to do was truly
protect the homeland, according to the online posts.

People’s Daily: the Diaoyu Islands Belong to Japan

Two articles published in 1953 and 1958 by People’s Daily
have recently been widely circulated on the internet.
Both articles openly claimed that
the Diaoyu Islands belong to Japan.

The articles quoted the then CCP Foreign Ministry
spokesman, saying that alleged news that,
“China never gives up sovereignty over the
Ryukyu Islands" was a rumor fabricated the U.S.
The article also said that back in August 1951,
then CCP Premier Zhou Enlai commented in a statement.
“Isles, including the Ryukyu Islands and the Ogasawara
Islands, had never been disaffiliated from Japan,
according to all international agreements in the past."

The CCP’s historical remarks aroused
wide outcry on the internet in China.
Lots of people demanded
an explanation from People’s Daily.

A netizen said in a post, “the government turned out to
have been fooling the Chinese people all these years."
“And now the public understand who the real traitor is!"

Gu Kailai Case: Inequality Before the Law

Comments continue on Gu Kailai’s suspended death
sentence after being convicted of murder with intent.

The New York Times reported that the CCP court’s
verdict"appears to have prompted anger and cynicism from almost everyone here who paid attention."

The news quoted legal observers, saying that Gu Kailai
is “a trained lawyer, (and) would have known precisely what she was doing."
“She planned the crime herself,
put the poison in his mouth herself,
destroyed the evidence herself
but didn’t turn herself in."

Chinese netizens compared Gu Kailai with Xia Junfeng.

Xia was a street vendor in Shenyang, and was given the
death penalty for killing two urban management officers.

A netizen said, “A lawyer got a suspended
death sentence for deliberate murder.
While a street vendor got death penalty for self-defense."
A lawyer questioned, “Why was she only given reprieve?
Has our Constitution been distorted
to inequality before the law? “
