Facebook

Graduates Warned: Chinese Society Is a

Dangerous and Dirty World

A professor at China University of Political Science and Law

(CUPL), Cong Riyun gave a speech for the 2013 Graduation

Ceremony recently which became popular among China’s

online communities such as WeChat.

The Professor told graduates that they might face China’s

critical changes in the future.

Cong also said, after graduation Chinese students would

have to step into a dangerous and dirty world.

Cong Riyun is a professor, PhD advisor and director of Politics

Science Institute at CUPL.

Last summer, he made a speech for his school’s Graduation

Ceremony as the faculty representative.

In his speech, Cong told students that “Each generation

has their own fate.

Your generation had a peaceful childhood and teenage

years, but in future you may experience critical changes

in Chinese society.”

Cong also told graduates that the Chinese society ahead

of them is a colorful stage for their life; meanwhile it is

also a dangerous and dirty world.

Cong asked students: “Are you able to keep a clear mind

despite everyone else’s indulgences?

Are you able to preserve your integrity in that dirty world?”

Cong’s warning message is “If you cannot resist the filth

all the time, you can choose to resist it sometimes;

If you have no courage to actively criticize wrongdoings,

you can still do it in a passive manner;

Even if you don’t do anything, you should have respect

for those who protest against injustices;

Even if you have no respect for them, you should never

shoot arrows in their back and help the evil.”

Professor Cong wished his students would choose to

stand on the side of rationality and civilization to support

ordinary Chinese people at critical moments.

Similar to Cong’s speech, the associate dean of CUPL’s Law

School He Bing voiced his feelings differently at a graduation

ceremony several years ago.

At the 2011 graduation party of his school, He said: “This is

an absurd era; you are encouraged to sing revolutionary songs

but you are not allowed to start a revolution;

You are encouraged to watch a movie named ‘The Founding

of a Party’, but you cannot found any party in reality.”

He also said “You don’t have to behave like a symbol of

justice like Bao Gong, but you cannot frame good people.”

The video of He’s speech later became very popular

on the Internet.

Wang Ying, president of a funding management company

in Beijing, said he felt bad for Chinese faculties as they have

to say farewell to their students with such a heavy heart.

Wang told NTD that, in China there are many people

who share similar opinions.

However, most of them cannot say it openly

under social pressure.

Those who honestly speak their feelings are either regarded

as heroes or abnormal individuals.

If everything goes right, more Chinese will be able to

tell the truth.

In 2013, Wang Ying voiced support for venture capitalist

Wang Gongquan.

Wang was arrested as he attended the “New Citizens’

Movement” initiated by Chinese lawyer Xu Zhiyong.

Xu was recently sentenced to four years in prison and

Wang was still awaiting trial with restricted freedom

after three months of detention.

Even Wang Ying himself is now under police surveillance.

Wang Ying:”All journalists visiting my home

have been removed.

Some were directly taken away by the police in front of

my home. Some others were caught by State Security

officers at hotels and left after talking.

You should carefully watch over my place to see

how abnormal it is.

Since last year I have only said something that any normal

person would say, and made some normal reactions.

Then I became a target of surveillance.”

Wang said, China’s most important issue is about how China

can be turned into a normal state from an abnormal one.

Wang Ying:”I think you should tell Chinese people that things

happening here are very abnormal.

Such abnormalities not only affect those living here but will

impact many more people including foreigners.

It (the Communist Regime) is a challenge to any normal life

in the world and modern civilization.

Its damage can be much worse than we had imagined.”

A Deutsche Welle report quoted words from Jin Zhong,

the Editor-in-Chief of Hong Kong’s Open Magazine Jin Zhong.

“A Storm of anti-corruption led by Xi Jinping is developing

in China.

Those CUPL graduates will face that storm right after

they step out of campus.”
