Woeser: Fire Did Not Ruin the Ancient Tibetan Town

A blaze reduced more than 250 houses to ashes in a

Tebetan town in Yunnan on January 11.

While people mourned the destruction of a thousand year

old historical town, the Tibetan poet, Woeser, says the fire

is not the cause of the ruin of this ancient Tibetan town.

Radio France Internationale reported that Woeser engaged

in a year long protest calling for the protection of Tibetan

culture and said that high commercialization in recent years

has already changed the ancient town beyond recognition.

Woeser explained that in 2001 Shangri-La was given to the

town to meet the needs of tourism.

At that time, there were some old houses of the Tibetan style.

Later, many new houses were built imitating Square Street in

Lijiang, and filled with bars and pubs, and the old town was

fully commercialized.

Those original Tibetan houses have been rebuilt and

renovated losing the texture of the ancient town.
