Anti-Nuclear Demonstration In Guangdong

On July 12, thousands of people held a massive

demonstration in Jiangmen City, Guangdong Province.

They were protesting against a nuclear plant to be built locally.

In the morning, people gathered in Jiangmen

East Lake Square, marching to the city hall.

Protestors shouted slogans and held anti-nuclear banners.

A large number of police were present.

The crowd attempted to attack the city hall

but were confronted by the police.

The vice Mayer of Jiangmen came out to pacify the crowd,

promising to extend the posting period by 10 more days.

According to Jiangmen municipal government, this

nuclear fuel processing plant costing about 37 billion yuan

will be built in Jiangmen’s Heshan Town, manufacturing

purified uranium conversion, enrichment, fuel element facilities and so on.

This project is a joint venture from China Nuclear Industry

Group and China Guangdong Nuclear Power Group.

The production of nuclear materials will supply all

Daya Bay nuclear plants in Guangdong province.

In March, China Nuclear Industry Group signed an investment

agreement and quietly began preliminary engineering in April.

Jiangmen municipal government posted its notice on July 4,

allowing only 10 days for public consultation.

This lack of involvement caused strong resentment

among the residents.

This nuclear plant is only 100-120 km from

Hong Kong and Macau.

The Macau government expressed concerns and

Hong Kong has asked people to join the opposing side,

to avoid turning the Pearl River Delta into

a “big nuclear furnace".

Many media agencies in Hong Kong and Macau

reported the Protests.

Photos and onsite conditions posted by people from

Mainland China have been deleted from the Internet.

Sino-US Relationship

During the US-China Strategic Economic Dialogue, Vice

Premier Wang Yang, gave a speech on July 10 speech.

He said the US and China share a marital relationship.

Two parties can fight and display their differences,

but must increase understanding and mutual trust.

News Corp. Chairman Rupert Murdoch can divorce his Chinese

wife, but the U.S. and China cannot divorce, which is too costly.

Wang Yang’s speech caused different interpretations.

The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) mouthpiece

“Xinhua" detailed his speech on Thursday.

Mainland netizens said that his metaphor showed

embarrassment and disturbance.

Chen Yixin from Taiwan, an expert on US affairs,

told “Voice of America” that

using others’ private affairs to add humor

is inappropriate in an international setting.

Are Tibetan and Xinjiang People Enjoying Human Rights?

On July 11, State Councilor Yang Jiechi, joined Wang Yang in

the US-China dialogue, held a press conference in Washington.

He said: “Tibet and Xinjiang people have a happy life

with unprecedented freedom and human rights."

His remarks caused a public uproar.

After the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) occupation

of Tibet in 1951, it ruled Tibet with an iron fist.

Since 2009, over 110 Tibetans have died from self-immolation.

According to human rights organizations, on the weekend, 15

Tibetans were shot while celebrating the Dalai Lama’s birthday,

Repeatedly massive blood-shedding events also took place

in the Xijiang region.

Xinjiang Uighur people have been complaining

about discrimination.

According to overseas Uighur groups on Monday,

17 Uighurs were arrested in Karamary City.

Nine women were arrested for wearing clothing with

ethnic traits and eight men for having big beards.
