May Fourth Movement: A Century Long Impact

The May Fourth Movement took place nearly 100 years ago,

and the Chinese government still hosts celebrations for it.

With 100 years of Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP)

propaganda, May Fourth has become a synonym of “patriotism, progress, democracy, and science.”

However, historians believe though May Fourth Movement

brought ideas of democracy and science to China,

the CCP had in fact ruined the Chinese traditional culture,

which lead to the loss of ethics and to moral deterioration.

According to China’s state media report, 100 years later,

not only the Mainland but also Hong Kong, Macao,

and Taiwan are still celebrating the May Fourth Movement.

There’s even an experience sharing seminar about it,

called, “My Chinese Dream.”

International media noted that Chinese young people now,

are mostly “exquisite egoist” or perfunctory materialists.

There are very few people who cultivate independent

personality, or fight for citizens’ freedom to revive the May Fourth spirit in China.

Political commentator Xing Tianhang pointed out,

those people who love China most have been persecuted.

Many Chinese people chose the money worship,

when faced with conflicts.

Xing Tianhang, political commentator: “This is related

to the environment in Mainland China.

The government doesn’t welcome people who truly give

to the country, and suppresses those who really worry about China.

Those people, as we know, are called dissidents,

including outspoken lawyers who protect peoples’ rights.

And they are the people,

who love China the most.”

Historian Li Yuanhua thinks, talking about May Fourth,

western science and democracy may still have some positive effect on confronting the evil CCP,

but Chinese people can’t ignore the tragic consequence

that May Fourth has brought to China through total negation of traditional Chinese culture.

Li Yuanhua, historian: “Their so called introducing

democracy and science as universal values,

actually negated Chinese culture totally,

which is the basic spirit of May Fourth.

Thus, the new culture Chen Duxiu and Wu Shi talked about

was to destroy the whole traditional Chinese culture.

And due to this condition,

the communism was able to enter China.”

Li Yuanhua says that Chinese young patriots at that time

believed China was restricted by the traditional culture.

In fact, even during Qing Dynasty people had more freedom

of speech and association than during CCP’s dictatorship.

On May 4th, 1919, students went out to protest in Beijing,

against giving the rights over Shandong Province to Japan,

as China entered the World War I under the condition

of all German spheres of influence be returned to China.

The Chinese students protested against the weak China’s

government through a parade and a strike that day.

Later on, young scholars started to look into the reasons of

the government’s weakness and means to save the country.

So the government started to deny Confucianism,

and initiated a New Culture Movement, that fully negated the traditional Chinese culture.

Liu Yinquan, former history professor, China: “Confucianism

represents the essence of traditional Chinese culture.

Ruining Confucianism is in fact

a negation of the traditional Chinese culture.

Then, why did many people approve the May Fourth?

Because of the patriotism the May Fourth promoted.”

Within a year after May Fourth, the movement’s leaders

Li Dazhao and Chen Duxiu started to build the CCP.

Liu Yinquan: “The May Fourth was well used

by the Soviet Union.

It managed to turn a patriotic movement

into an anti-western cultural movement,

and eventually made it an anti-imperialism movement,

that is against the culture of capitalism.

Because if it’s against the western world,

it must seek a refuge with the Soviet Union.

In this way, Chinese government become communist,

and a vassal of the Soviet Union.”

Liu Yinquan also pointed out,

for the emergence of CCP, KMT allied with Russia,

as well as the KMT-CCP cooperation

were all directly related to the May Fourth Movement.

Zhong Weiguang, a freethinker living in Germany,

says the slogan of May Fourth is “Science and Democracy.”

However, it related science with Marxism,

and democracy with the CCP’s dictatorship.

Marxism was the main “ideology” and “ideological weapon”

that led Chinese elites in the past century.
