Gu Kailai Receives Death Sentence with Reprieve

A Chinese court has sentenced Gu Kailai, wife of disgraced Communist Party official Bo Xilai, to death with a two-year reprieve after finding her guilty of murdering British businessman Neil Heywood.

中國法庭判決遭貶謫的共產黨官員、薄西來的太太谷開來死刑，二年緩刑，在發現她謀殺英國商人海伍德。

The sentence was reported by witnesses to the trial, as only state-run media were allowed in the courtroom. It means Gu is likely to face life in prison, if she doesn’t commit an offense in the next two years.

這項判決是由目擊審判的目擊者所報導，因為只有國營媒體被允許進到法庭。這意味著谷開來可能面對終身監禁，如果她在未來二年沒有犯錯的話。

The outcome is not a surprise to many analysts, including NTD Senior China Analyst Chen Zhifei, who predicted the outcome. He said that it would be the safest sentence to keep the Communist Party stable ahead of the 18th Party Congress. And that Gu, as one of the Party’s elite, would be unlikely to actually be executed.

這項結果對許多分析家而言，並不訝異，包括先前就作了預測的新唐人資深中國評論員陳志飛。他說這將是在中共十八黨大會前，維持共產黨穩定最安全的判決。並且，作為黨菁英之一的谷開來，將是不可能實際被處決。

During her trial, Gu did not deny charges that she poisoned Heywood last November.

在審判過程中，谷開來並沒有否認她在去年11月毒殺海伍德的控訴。

Zhang Xiaojun, a Bo family aide who admitted helping Gu with the murder, received a 9-year jail sentence, a witness said.

目擊者說，承認協助谷開來謀殺海伍德的薄家助手張曉軍，被判九年刑期。

Gu’s trial is possibly a prelude to formal punishment of her husband Bo Xilai. He is under investigation for alleged violations of Party discipline—an accusation that covers corruption, abuse of power and other misdeeds.

谷開來的判決，可能是她丈夫薄西來正式受到懲罰的前奏。薄正在因違反黨紀而受到調查─控訴包括貪污、濫權，以及其他的罪行。
