Facebook

No Rebuilding 4 years after Wenchan Earthquake

Four years after the devastating earthquake in Wenchan,

world attention on this horrible tragedy has faded.

However, billions of relief funds haven’t really helped

the local residents.

Many roads remain shut-off, and thousands

of victims haven’t been resettled.

Orphans from the earthquake are further abandoned.

They cry out for media attention and the CCP authorities’ help.

The May 12th earthquake took place 4 years ago

destroying tens of thousands of houses,

and killing more than 80,000 people. The painful memories

are so difficult to endure for the local residents.

Despite the RMB 76.7billion worth of donations and relief

funds poured into the area, very little progress has been made towards rebuilding.

Recently, Chinese writer Tie Liu visited the heavily hit area

in Wenchuan and saw the miserable scene, still looking like it was 4 years ago.

Tie Liu: “We spent 8 days in affected Tibetan areas, including

Lushan, Tianquan, Markang, Chagou, Luding, and Wenchuan.

We took damaged roads with no maintains.

Even the police there said to us that you should raise more

awareness about this as we don’t have the channels to appeal to the above.

The corrupted officials only want power and money."

Tie Liu said in many locations,

the roads are too bad to be used.

From Baleng to Wolong, a short distance,

took more than 3 hours.

Tie Liu: “The 25 km road has been totally ignored for

the past 4 years.

The road can’t be used, it’s so scary,

and cars can’t get through.

It’s alongside the upper stream of the River of Min

with mountains on one side.

Our car bumping up and down on the road. You might fall

into the river or be hit by sliding stones. It’s so dangerous."

Ms. Yu from Wolong district wants the media’s help

to get more attention on the damaged roads which haven’t been repaired for 4 years now.

Ms. Yu:"These kinds of roads are everywhere.

Hill slides, roads flooded, everywhere.

It has been like this for all these years.

Who knows where the money goes?

You know the entire situation;

please help us if you could."

Staff from Xiaojin county government said that

the road was poor because of the rain.

Staff from Xiaojin county government: “Because of the rain,

cars can’t get through. Hills slide because they dig tunnels.

When tunnels go through the mountains,

the mountains collapse."

Tie Liu stated that the shut-off roads are not maintained

because they are not main roads.

Local authorities only care about face-saving projects,

which can be seen by the CCP central authority.

Tie Liu: “Many local residents said to me.

Please tell that to CCP central committee, to the public.

Corrupted officials used relief funds to buy big houses.

The Agriculture department got the money.

And Corrupted Officials put the money on their own pockets."

Ms. Yu told that besides those no maintains roads,

those victims from few years ago earthquake, still live in temporary shelters in Beichuan.

An official from Sichuan Department of Civil Affairs said that

after the earthquake, there were 630 orphans, only 12 of them were adopted.

The rest stay either with their relatives or social charities.

Reports said that some adoption families found the orphans

were hard to get along with, so they handed them over to charities, which again hurt the orphans.
