Facebook

German Journalist Rescue’s Her Assistant at he Risk of Rrrest

Zhang Miao, is the former assistant to German reporter Köckritz,

journalist to ‘Die Zeit’ newspaper in China.

Zhang Miao wanted to participate in a poem recitation supporting

the Hong Kong umbrella movement in Beijing early last October.

He was arrested by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP)

with the crime of ‘creating disturbances’,

and had not been released until now.

When Köckritz was looking for the whereabouts of Zhang Miao,

she found herself a target of CCP, with the threat

of interrogation at any moment.

This alas, has triggered a very strong reaction from abroad

after being exposed.

Please see the following report.

One of the most humane newspapers in Germany, ‘ Die Zeit’,

recently published an article, ‘They arrested Zhang Miao’.

The former newspaper reporter in Beijing, Angela Köckritz,

gives a detailed description of the experience of herself

and her assistant, Zhang Miao in Beijing in the article.

Zhang Miao, 40 years old now, has been living in Germany

for many years with a residence permit.

Two years ago, she began her job at Die Zeit’s Beijing office.

By the end of last September, after the Hong Kong umbrella

movement was launched,

Köckritz and Zhang went to Hong Kong with the

intention of reporting on the movement.

However, due to Zhang Miao’s expiration date to remain

in Hong Kong, had to return to Beijing alone.

It was not long before Köckritz was notified that Zhang Miao

had been arrested with the crime of ‘creating disturbances’

in Songzhuang.

She asked around and had found out that Zhang Miao

was going to attend a poem recitation supporting

the Hong Kong umbrella movement.

The Ministry of Public Security identified Zhang Miao

as a rioter and sent her to the detention centre.

The article mentioned that China had arrested more than 200

people for their support of the Hong Kong umbrella movement.

Of which more than ten artists came from Songzhuang.

Afterwards, Köckritz was interrogated four times.

The police not only threatened that her press card would not

be extended,

but also told her Zhang Miao had admitted that Köckritz

was the organiser of all events for supporting the Occupy Central.

They have been identified as organising protests

for their trips to Hong Kong

Angela Köckritz had no choice but to leave China for fear

of her own safety.

It took two months for Zhang Miao to finally see a lawyer.

She is still detained today because she refuses

to sign the accusation of public security.

The article ‘They arrested Zhang Miao’, was first published

in German, then in Chinese, as well as in English.

German mainstream media have all followed in the reporting.

Besides criticising the current legal system in China,

Köckritz also reflected on herself.

As a foreign reporter’s assistant, Zhang Miao did not

officially register, because of her concern

of the oversight, and also for saving money.

Köckritz also said in a North German television interview

that, “All my work as a journalist, has been trumped

up as a series of espionage."

Hong Kong and China District Representative of International

Federation, Hu Liyun:

“After 2008 Olympic Games, the State Council issued a directive,

that all foreign reporters have the right to interview

freely in mainland China,

as long as the interviewee is willing to do the interview. “

Hong Kong and China District Representative

of International Federation, Hu Liyun,

believes that the Chinese authorities have been saying one thing

whilst doing another.

She said that, during the interview process, foreign

journalists in China are still often interfered

with by the public security departments.

Even before the reporter arrives, the interviewee

has been warned or taken away.

This also shows that in China, the foreign journalists’

whereabouts, mails and telephone are not secure.

Beijing activist Hu Jia said that the foreign media without

the imposed restrictions from the Central Propaganda Department,

will often report the truth, but are seen as troublemakers

by the CCP.

So today more and more foreign journalists,

like several reporters from the New York Times,

including its Beijing Representative Office Director,

has not obtained a formal working visa.

Beijing activist Hu Jia: “Like those journalists with

foreign nationality,

their status is becoming more and more vulnerable ,

let alone a news assistant of foreign media.

It proves that the authorities just do not want

to have an independent monitor in China. “

Hu believes that the Chinese authorities do not allow Chinese

citizens becoming an official reporter in foreign media.

So they can only work in this area as assistants or researchers.

The CCP’s suppression on them is becoming more serious.

Zhang Miao suffered the torture of sleep deprivation

for three days and four nights.

The NGO Reporters Without Borders released the

‘2014 Annual Report’,

showing that in 2014 China had the most professional reporters

and citizen reporters under detention in the world.

Gao Yu, 70-years-old and Tie Liu, 81-years-old,

both have endured long-term arrest.

Hu Liyun pointed out that freedom of expression

is a fundamental human right, regardless of the country,

which is also required by international human rights conventions.

And China is a signatory.

Hu Jia keeps an optimistic attitude. He believes that there

are two sides, two outcomes.

When the authorities reach the heights of their evil,

doing all bad things to people,

this then allows everyone to see the true nature of CCP.

The false and deceptive propaganda is shown clearly.

Their (CCP’s) actions, will become their true gravedigger.
