New Report Shows Air Pollution Kills 1.2 Million People in China in 2010

New scientific research data indicates air pollution was one of the main causes of death in the world’s population in 2010. The number of deaths from air pollution in China reached 1.2 million, accounting for almost 40% of the global total.

On April 2, the “New York Times" quoted the December issue of “Lancet”, a British medical journal. Air pollution is the world’s seventh leading cause of death, and total of 3.2 million people died worldwide in 2010 because of it.

This report, entitled, “The Global Disease Burden” highlights that air pollution ranks fourth as a lethal factor in China. It follows dietary risk, hypertension, and smoking.

The report also quoted warnings released last month from the Economic Cooperation and Development Organization. It said that in 2050, air pollution will become the number one environmental factor that will cause human death. It is more serious than water pollution, as well as lack of public health facilities. It is estimated that each year, 3.6 million people die prematurely because of air pollution. This mainly occurs in China and India.
