Facebook

Western Media Hacked by CCP: China-US Cyber War?

Recently, western news media including New York Times,

Wall Street Journal, Washington Post and Bloomberg News,

all reported that their computers had been attacked

by Chinese hackers.

Monitoring western media’s reports on China affairs

is believed to be one of the main purposes of the attacks.

As more and more American media, corporations and

governmental agencies become victims of Chinese hackers,

the Obama administration is preparing to take

stronger measures against these cyber attacks.

On Jan 31, the Washington Post published an article,

which revealed that since Oct 25, 2012,

hackers broke into the computer network of

New York Times at around 8 am (Beijing Time) every day.

Their daily “work” last about 8 hours for each attack.

The Chinese Communist Party’ (CCP) government

denied it was behind those attacks saying “cyber attacks have transnational and anonymous characteristics.”

Yet, experts believe those hackers are indeed from China,

and their attacks were organized by the CCP authorities.

Xia Ming, professor of political science at New York City

University, remarked that the United States is already in a cyber war with the CCP.

Xia Ming, professor, New York City University: ”Firstly,

the attacks are wide in range and large in magnitude.

Secondly, the targeted media are the most renowned ones

in western countries.

After analyzing thousands of various groups of information,

the FBI’s cyber branch reached the conclusion,

that all those attacks were from China,

and were organized by the CCP government.

The CCP is trying to start a cyber war against the social,

economic, and political system of the United States.”

Zhang Qi, dissident from Chongqing: ”In the world today,

the only ones that can bypass the law meanwhile have the technological and financial capabilities,

to organize such a large-scale cyber attack

against western media.

And they are the few dictatorship regimes.

North Korea hardly has the necessary resources to do that.

Neither does Cuba. So CCP is the most reasonable suspect.”

Two anonymous former US officials revealed to media

on Feb 1st, that the Obama administration is preparing a new report on National Intelligence Estimate.

The report will present the network threats against US,

especially those from China in detail.

It is speculated, the report will define a network attack

as an “economic and national security issue.”

The estimate report is drafted by the National Intelligence

Council (NIC), which will take stronger measures against CCP’s cyber attacks.

Possible moves include blocking some specific types

of visa against China,

or submitting projects that make large purchases from China

to national security agencies for stricter inspection.

Xia Ming said, former US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton

made declarations on Internet freedom two years ago.

In her statement, Clinton said that Internet freedom

is the most important one following the famous Four Freedoms presented by Franklin Roosevelt.

The United States will spare no efforts

to protect and boost Internet freedom.

Xia also mentioned several moves recently made

by the US government.

Xia Ming: “Firstly, since the declaration of Internet freedom,

the US government had enhanced inputs and coordination work on cyber safety.

For example, the National Security Council held meetings

about Internet safety which gathered major US companies to coordinate their protection work.

In addition, FBI has also been collecting materials

to investigate domestic cyber attacks against organizations and individuals involving China’s human rights issues.”

Last week, US Defense Department recruited

thousands as network security staffs.

In addition, they extended their target into hackers groups,

hoping they’ll contribute to the US security protection too.

Meanwhile, members of the hacker group “Anonymous”

also claimed to destroy CCP’s “Great Firewall of China.”

Xia Ming: ”More and more Chinese civilians

are using the Internet now.

By microblogging or whatever means of circumventing

Internet censorship, China’s cyber space is basically connected to the global network.

The formation of “new” public opinions

has taken place in this space.

Although the CCP authorities still have control over public

administrative agencies and their officials, it has lost control over public opinions in general.”

Xia Ming believes that the Internet will continue to gather

and reflect the real feelings of the Chinese people.

It also becomes a new platform which allows Chinese

to join the body of the global society.

Xia remarked, some cyber technologies are used by CCP

to suppress Chinese people and protect its regime,

however, they can also become critical in overturning CCP,

if the global society, especially the United States, comes to understand how powerful they are.
