Heavy Fog Surrounds Beijing, Causing Unrest Among Residents

Recently, severe fog conditions appeared in Beijing, with visibility less than 200 feet, causing severe flight delays. In addition, many expressways have been shut down. The air quality was tested and found to be “toxic”.

Severe fog conditions were again reported in Beijing with visibility less than 50m. Some highways were closed down and more than 390 flights were canceled.

According to information from Beijing City Environmental Monitoring Center, the Beijing air pollution index was 80 around 3-4pm, which is considered good. From 4-5pm, the pollution index was 193, which means a low level of pollution. pollution levels went down past 4pm.

However, the PM2.5 air pollution index published by the U.S. embassy shows the PM2.5 density reached 522, exceeding the maximum tolerable value of 500. The air pollution is beyond index, or terrible.

In air quality index (AGI) measurements, 150-200 means “unhealthy”; 200-300 means “very unhealthy”; 300-500 means “toxic”.

Many mainland netizens expressed that the Beijing air pollution again “busted the scope.” Resident Ye Jingchun expressed that the air in Beijing is getting worse.

Ye Jingchun, “Air is Beijing is bad, inside the city the blue sky is not visible. (I) lived in Beijing for 50 years and used to count stars when I was young, now you can’t see stars anymore. Living here, I can’t even leave this place, can only follow my fate! That’s all I can do.”

Living under a gray sky, residents can only accept the reality. Another Beijing resident also expressed helplessness.

Beijing resident Zhou Zhong, “I feel it’s much worse than 30 years ago, I was young then, now I’m 48. The air was fresh when I was young, now it’s cloudy, dirty.

Normally (sky) is gray, today it was very foggy, it’s frequently like this.

Because we are used to it, our lungs just like a vacuum cleaner, nothing we could do…”

CCTV reporter Rui Chenggang wrote on his micro-blog, “what’s with the air in Beijing today? In the hallway, I thought something was burning, the basement has the same smell. After going outside, I realized everywhere was like this,

my throat is starting to hurt.”

Unable to change the air quality, residents can only try to protect themselves.

Try to stay indoors and wear masks when going outside.

According to a report, a seller on the online shopping site Taobao, sold 30,000 masks on Dec 4, a twofold increase over a two week average. More than 20,000 were bought by Beijing residents.

Experts warn that cold weather combined with severe air pollution can cause absorption of dust, pollutants and bacteria harmful to the human respiratory tract.

Respiratory Expert Wang Lei, “During such foggy weather, in addition to water vapor, there is dust, sulfur dioxide, and other sulfur chemicals (in the air), they are harmful if inhaled, especially for the respiratory system.”

The media said to avoid eating waste oil, we can eat at home; to drink clean water, we can buy a water purifier; to avoid melamine, we don’t drink milk;

now even breathing might get you poisoned.
