Thirty Percent Pay Cut Mandated for All CCTV Employees

The incumbent Chinese Communist Party (CCP) leader
Xi Jinping, keeps striking the CCTV with his
anti-corruption campaign.

Two directors of the mouthpiece’s finance channel and
documentary channel, along with several famous anchors,
have been detained.

Following that, it was reported on Monday that all
CCTV employees will take a 30 percent cut in their salary.

The finance channel of Phoenix Television reported
on Aug 11 that, all CCTV employees will be subject to
a 30 percent pay cut.

They have also been informed that a further pay cut plan is
on the way as well. What caused the pay cuts has not been announced.

Sina also learned from internal sources that the pay cut plan
had been implemented since the first half of 2014.
In addition, the CCTV’s 2013 year-end bonuses have
yet to be given. Some production teams have left the media due to that.

Liu Yiming, Chinese Internet writer and freelancer:
”Probably the pay cut is related to recently exposed
corruption cases inside CCTV.

In fact the salary level there was pretty high. Cutting paychecks can
serve to make the TV station more obedient to the orders of the current
party leadership.

If doing a better job maybe they can get back the income losses
in the future.”

In 2012, there had been media reports that CCTV anchors
earned as much as over 200,000 Yuan ($32,500) per month.
For example, Li Ruiying was paid 280,000 Yuan ($45,500)
per month.
Other anchors such as Shui Junyi, Dong Qing and Lu Jian,
all earned 260,000 Yuan ($42,200) per month.

On July 5, Shui Junyi said in a speech that the public should
not trust those reports about his monthly income.
However, this only leads to more questions from the Chinese.

Founded in 1958, the CCTV is a vice-ministerial
state-run unit.
Both of its president and vice president are officials
of ministerial level.

The CCTV’s prime-time advertisements are extremely
popular among enterprises.

By 2013’s year-end, the 10-second post Evening News
advertisement had earned 3.5 billion Yuan ($568 million)
for the media.

The finance channel is also extremely profitable as its topic
closely relates to business circles.

In Mid-July, Hong Kong-based Ming Pao reported that
the CCP leaders were investigating all CCTV channels.
Inside the finance channel, someone was brought for
interrogation almost every day day.
The report said, possibly higher-level CCTV officials
would be dismissed in the future.

The article also said that besides CCTV president Hu Zhanfan,
vice presidents including Luo Ming, Gao Feng, Sun Yusheng
and Yuan Zhengming were also placed under interrogation.

In addition, investigation teams had moved into the CCTV
since June, and have paid particular attention to advertisement
revenues and expenditures.

In the same month, director of finance channel Guo Zhenxi
was placed under investigation.
Following that, several key members of the CCTV
were also detained.
The list includes former vice director of finance channel
Li Yong, director of documentary channel Liu Wen,
male anchor Rui Chenggang, female anchor Ouyang Zhiwei
and other finance channel employees.

It was reported that the CCTV’s finance channel had
become Guo Zhenxi’s personnal money spinner.
On one hand, Guo used March 15 Consumer Rights
Day Gala as a tool to intimidate enterprises;
On the other hand, he drew entrepreneurs to his side
by naming them “Annual CCTV Economic Figures”.
During Guo’s 8-year rule in the channel, he accumulated
assets of at least 2 billion Yuan ($325 million).
The followers around Guo also earned a lot from
sharing what he gains.

Chinese media also reported that CCTV’s famous female
anchors Ye Yingchun and Shen Bing were under investigation
as they were involved into Zhou Yongkang’s case.

Last December, former CCTV vice president and vice
minister for public security Li Dongsheng was dismissed.

Senior Chinese legal scholar Zhao Yuanming said that:
Li Dongsheng had used the CCTV’s beauties as tributes
to higher-level party officials, such as to get promoted.

By doing that, Li had made the whole media a public
harem for the CCP’s bigwigs, like a place for prostitution.

Zhao Yuanming:”The CCTV broadcasts programs to
the whole state.
Therefore it should set a good example both ideologically
and morally.
On the contrary, the CCTV now has very bad influence
over the state as its corruption and sex scandals are exposed.
I think a 30-percent pay cut is only the first step in
cleaning the organ.”

Zhao Yuanming said, the Central Discipline Inspection
Commission could make further cleaning moves
against the CCTV.

Zhao Yuanming:”All those illegally benefiting themselves
politically or economically should be subjected to lawsuits
and all their embezzled money must be returned.

Only by doing this can the corrupt atmosphere be changed.

Not only beauty anchors should be punished, all their bosses
should also be punished so long as they committed acts of corruption.”

Sources inside the CCTV revealed that, the anti-corruption
campaign has yet to end.
Higher-level officers are being involved and more employees
of finance channel are taken away for interrogation.
Investigation of channel directors also continues.
