10 Million A Night: China’s “Vanity Fair"

Being a nude substitute for Zhang Ziyi, a Chinese film star,
has not helped Shao Xiaoshan get under the spotlight.
Recently, her blog post exposed “the hidden rules,”
prevailing in China’s entertainment circles.
A famous film actress charged 10 million Yuan for offering
one-night “bedroom service,” according to Shao.
The news instantly grabbed the public attention.

Shao Xiaoshan was firstly known as Zhang Ziyi’s nude
substitute in “The Banquet," film directed by Feng Xiaogang.
However, the actress did not become famous,
even after playing a number of roles in films & TV shows.

On July 22, in her Sina blog, Shao Xiaoshan revealed
“the casting couch” between directors, actors and models.
Her post, titled ‘Bedroom Deals in the Entertainment Circle,’
attracted over 300,000 hits the same day.
She disclosed that a film actress, who was previously
reported to offer bedroom services, is ‘the real deal.’
“In a private club, a businessman overjoyed by that actress,
struck a deal with her – 10 million Yuan for a night service.”

Shao Xiaoshan said that the sex scandal-linked actress
was once asked, “You’re such a famous actress, why do you need to make money this way?”
The actress replied: “I fear that one day when I am old
and unpopular I’ll not earn so much from films anymore.
How would I live then? Thus I like to earn
as much money as possible while I’m still young.”

“Quotes for accepting dinner invitation” by some Chinese
actresses were previously exposed by the media.
Shao said this was not groundless, as many actresses
have professionals to market their “bedroom services.”

Shao Xiaoshan: “This is a commonplace for actresses
to earn money in China and Hong Kong.
An agent in the modeling industry told me that nowadays,
lots of unknown models often earn money this way.
Because they have a high standard of living,
renting big houses and hiring nannies.
How could they pay that many expenses?
That’s a way to make money.”

Shao said among these bedroom services’ offering people
some are very wealthy but afraid of being poor in the future, while others just want to make money.
Shao Xiaoshan concludes that the core reason
is “the money.”
She revealed that in these circles even film actors
are required to offer bedroom services.

Shao said that she is not the only source,
that exposes the dark side of these circles.
Businessmen show off by disclosing whom they slept with,
for how much, what are the star’s bed skills, etc.

Shao calls the entertainment industry “Vanity Fair." People
there have higher desire for fame than other professionals.
So they offer bedroom services for getting fame
and fortune, good roles, etc., she discloses.
Shao points out that some directors and producers
have fueled the fire by playing very bad roles in it.

Shao Xiaoshan: “Without these evil directors,
how could these actresses go so far today!
Some directors make inappropriate requests, such as,
‘I’ll give you this role if you offer me … ‘
Without their coercing,
how could the actresses behaved like that?"

However, the key reason for this problem
is the lack of faith, Shao deduces.

Shao Xiaoshan: “The believers in Christianity, Catholicism
or Buddhism know about retribution, so they won’t do this.
These religions have commandments,
that help maintain the moral values of society.
But for those without faith, they only believe in money,
and “prostitution is better than poverty."

Shao Xiaoshan believes in Buddhism since the age of eight,
she chants scriptures daily and read many Buddhist books.
Shao said in these circles there are some true believers,
but also there are some fake Buddhists too.
Even in today’s temples there are a lot of monks,
who do evil things in the name of Buddhism, Shao remarks.

Shao adds, entertainment circles still have decent people,
and this exposure is not for hyping herself.

Born in 1980 in Beijing, Shao Xiaoshan is a graduate
of Beijing Film Academy, has worked for Phoenix Weekly magazine, and was a Phoenix TV host.
She played roles in many films and TV shows,
like “Cell Phone,” and “The Grand Mansion Gate.”
A book written by Shao Xiaoshan is now being serialized
on book.sina.com.cn.
