Yao Ming Refuses Comparison with Party Secretary

April 1, at the 2012 Boao Youth Leadership Roundtable,
host Rui Chenggang questioned former NBA star Yao Ming, whether “high income is reasonable.”
Rui compared Yao Ming with Party Secretary of Yangzhou City,
Xie Zhengyi, pointing out the contrast between the two.
Yao Ming countered Rui, rejecting such a comparison.
Comments say today, Yao is still manipulated by CCP as an instrument.

At the meeting themed ‘Defining Happiness and Happy Society’,
CCTV host Rui said, income gap is a true problem for China.
He asked Yao Ming why his annual income reached 40-50 million
RMB, while the Party Secretary of Yangzhou City is less than 200,000.

Yao replied, the two of them followed different career systems
and followed two different modes of distribution.
Therefore, it was inappropriate to compare the 2.

On Forbes magazine’s 2011 China Celebrity list, Yao took his 8th
No.1 among sportsmen and actors, with an income of 229 million.
Injuries, however, greatly limited his ability
to accumulate more wealth.

Former basketball star Chen Kai said, Yao Ming’s income
should not be a public topic.
He pointed out that before his contract with NBA, Yao Ming
already had a contract with Chinese Basketball Association,
which made him an instrument of CCP instead of
being a free sportsman.
Even today, CCP still threatens Yao with this contract.

Chen Kai: “Yao Ming should think about
how to face this contract.
In the free world such as America you can find a lawyer
to revoke this contract, since it was signed under threat.
Such contracts can be abolished in the United States.”

Chen Kai said if Yao really wants to pursue freedom,
happiness, justice, and human dignity, he must choose between virtuous and evil.

Chen Kai: “Do not try to obtain benefits from the evil.
That will enslave oneself.
In China many people want to find a middle road
between evil and justice.
This apparent clever strategy falls into moral confusion and
stupidity. The two paths follow opposite directions.
One will finally fall into the water and drown
if he tries to take both. ”

Rui also asked whether Yao Ming could compare his income
with that of former U.S. official Pau Haenle.
Haenle himself said that although his income couldn’t match
Yao’s, he wouldn’t “hate” Yao Ming, since Yao “contributed a lot to society.
Haenle suggested paying attention to those who obtain
huge wealth without much contribution.

In this regard, Chen Kai said most CCP officials’ income
are like black-box.
Officials like Bo Xilai publicly maintain a low wage,

but by sending their family abroad, they accumulated
hundreds of millions of overseas assets.

Kai Chen: “When I was a soldier sportsman,
my monthly salary was 52Yuan.
But I could go abroad to travel and play,
and expenses could be reimbursed.”

According to Shanghai Municipal Bureau of Statistics,
the 2011 average income of Shanghai workers was 51,968 yuan.

Shanghai citizen Yu Zhonghuan said,
Party Secretary’s monthly salary is 18,000. Isn’t it?
Why would a Party Secretary earn so much?
Why would he earn 200,000 yuan a year?

Yu said it is unjust that a Party Secretary has such high salaries,
not including gray incomes such as free feasts and entertainments.
