“Jiang Zemin’s Wreath": Real or Fake?

After being rumored dead,
former Chinese President Jiang Zemin now appears in the media more frequently than when he was in office.
After the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) declared his death to be only a rumor on July 7, the public still discusses his “death."
On July 13, on the funeral of a former Shanghai mayor, a wreath bearing Jiang’s name arrived.
However, Jiang himself did not show up. Then, was the wreath really sent by Jiang?

According to Shanghai’s Dragon TV, on July 13,
Shanghai Longhua Funeral Home held a memorial service for Han Zheyi.
Han used to serve as secretary of the Shanghai Municipal CCP Committee and former vice-mayor of Shanghai.
He retired in 1983. Jiang became the mayor of Shanghai in 1985.

Han was given a high-profile funeral.
According to Dragon TV, all nine members of CCP’s Politburo Standing Committee, including Hu Jintao, sent wreathes.
To everyone’s surprise, there was a wreath sent by “Jiang Zemin and wife Wang Yeping".

“Jiang’s wreath" immediately became a headline.
Some media speculate that Jiang’s faction intentionally released this information to dispel the rumors of Jiang’s death.

Zhang Tianliang (columnist): “Now I think that within the CCP, different powers are fighting.
If Jiang is really dead, his followers would have lost their backing.
They would have no confidence in negotiating with CCP’s president Hu Jintao.

Also, on July 13, Hong Kong’s pro-CCP South China Morning Post reported that
when media was reporting the death of Jiang, he was resting at home.
It also reported that Jiang’s health could not allow him to be at the 2-hour rally to celebrate “the CCP’s 90th anniversary",
so the high-profile Jiang did not attend the rally.

However, the public also noted that on July 7,
a report of a so-called “insider of Xinhua News Agency" denying Jiang’s death was removed.
On July 13, South China Morning Post claimed that “Jiang was at home".
However, Jiang did not show up on Han Zheyi’s funeral. Instead, he simply sent a wreath.

Zhang Tianliang: “This is very strange, If Jiang Zemin is still alive,
he can appear in public for people to take his photos.
However, the CCP didn’t arrange him to come to any events.
Therefore, Jiang must be unable to face people.
Everyone can send a wreath in Jiang’s name.
Therefore, a wreath alone cannot prove that he is alive. “

Then, was the wreath bearing Jiang’s name really sent by him? Is he alive or dead?

CCP history scholar Lin Baohua commented that,
judging from the ambiguous information from various sources,
Beijing could not provide any pictures of Jiang’s being healthy to dispel the rumors.
So, he estimated that Jiang should be “brain dead". In his view,
that means Jiang Zemin is really dead.
