China Still Hungry for Taiwan

Jia Qinglin, member of the Standing Committee
of Politburo in the Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP)
and the CPPCC National Committee Chairman,
has publicly stated recently that Taiwan people
must “elect the right candidates”
in the next two elections in order to maintain
cross-strait relations.” Commentators believe
this is interference on Taiwan elections by CCP.
China should respect Taiwan’s election freedom,
or otherwise it will be counterproductive.

Radio France Internationale states that Jia Qinglin
recently attended the 7th cross-strait trade
and cultural forum in Chengdu, Sichuan.
He gave the above speech in a meeting
with KMT Honorary Chairman Wu Poh-hsiung.

Jia claimed the two important elections are key
to cross-strait relations; cross-strait
Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement (ECFA)
is an important mechanism
for maintaining the relationship.
Whoever implements the agreement it is
a very important step. He stressed particularly,
Taiwanese should “elect the right candidates."

Richard Tsoi, Vice President of HK Democratic Party,
said Taiwan people have their own election freedom,
they’ll go to elect whom they think is right;
but actually Jia’s words have “special meanings".

Richard Tsoi: “He (Jia) meant, they (CCP) want us
to elect people with ‘connection’ with the CCP.
Whoever Taiwanese elect, they (China authorities)
shouldn’t make irresponsible remarks, after all
these are elections of the Taiwan’s people!
Taiwanese have freedom on election.”

Lately, cross-strait economic and trade cooperation
had been frequent and expanding.
Mainland Deptartment of Commerce data showed
that in 1Q of 2011, total trade volume reached
USD37.6 billion, up nearly 20%.
Taiwan obtained surplus up to USD20 billion.

Lin Baohua, senior political and economic critic:
“Normally countries have economic
and trade exchanges. But the problem is:
China’s exchanges have political motives.
It is conspiracy of the CCP’s united front.
China should have normal exchanges.
With political conditions it will damage the exchange
and the cross-strait relationship."

Lin Baohua said Jia’s speech was an intervention
of Taiwan’s elections, putting pressure on Taiwan,
which is the CCP’s consistent attitude. He said,
Jia’s speech is to intimidate Taiwan by ceasing
economic “benefits” if Taiwan disobeys the CCP.

In 2009, Yuan Hongbing, a writer in exile, published
“Taiwan’s Disaster" which became a bestseller.
The book revealed the CCP intended to control
Taiwan by 2012. It actively used “temptation"
to win and differentiate Taiwan society,
and to encourage Taiwan internal conflicts.

Yuan Hongbing said Taiwan’s democratic system
set up a model for mainland China
and became the greatest threat to the regime,
so the CCP had done everything
to destroy Taiwan’s democratic system.

Lin Baohua also said the CCP has repeatedly
threatened Taiwan’s elections, even firing missiles
into waters near Taiwan, but each time
these actions caused the opposite effect.

Lin Baohua:"Because China is a communist country,
a terrorist state (regime), Taiwan has prevention
awareness, as well as US. This is due to China’s
national characteristics: one-party dictatorship."

Richard Tsoi emphasized however, that although
the CCP pressures Taiwan, it cannot change
the election freedom in Taiwan. Taiwan people
will definitely elect the right candidate
on their own, not being influenced by the CCP.
