Yang Jianli Refused Entry to Hong Kong Again

Dr. Yang Jianli is an exiled Chinese
democratic activist living in the U.S.
Dr Yang accepted an invitation from Lee Cheuk-yan,
Chairman of the Hong Kong Alliance in Support of
Patriotic Democratic Movement in China (HK Alliance)

The invitation was to participate in a media preview of
the world’s first June 4 Memorial Museum in Hong Kong.
However, Dr. Yang was forcibly repatriated, marking the
fourth time Yang Jianli was refused entry to Hong Kong.
Lee Cheuk-yan believes the Hong Kong
government adheres to blacklists provided
by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the June 4 massacre.
Currently, it is very difficult for pro-
democracy activists to enter Hong Kong.

Yang Jianli arrived at Hong Kong airport at
21:00 on April 19, from the United States, via Taipei.
He was travelling to attend a media preview
of the June 4 Memorial Museum on April 20.
He was detained for nearly four hours in Hong Kong
Immigration Department, and repatriated to Taiwan.

The Hong Kong Immigration Department declined
to explain why they refused entry to Yang Jianli.
Yang Jianli told BBC Chinese network
that he still holds a valid Chinese passport.
He should be allowed to enjoy a 7-day
transit visa exemption at ports of entry.
However, the refusal of entry proves that there is
a blacklist at HK Immigration, provided by Beijing.

HK Legislative Council Albert Ho Chun-yan had
traveled to the airport to assist Yang Jianli as a lawyer.
He indicated that immigration officers were delaying,
and seemed to wait for instructions from outside of HK.

Zhang Jian, China social issue researcher: “Since HK
was returned to China, the HK government has become
an accomplice, shifting from its former role as subordinate.
As a special administrative region of liberalism
and democracy, it is frightened of a democratic
fighter and rejects the entry of Dr. Yang Jianli.
This is very absurd."

Yang Jianli was born in Shandong Province, China.
He went to the United States to study in 1986, and
had returned to China to participate in the 1989
student democracy movement in Tiananmen Square.

He witnessed as the Chinese military shot and
killed innocent students, and saw the horror
scenes of students being rolled over by tanks.

Yang Jianli told Hong Kong’s Apple Daily that he had
planned to visit the June 4 Memorial Museum on April 20.
There, he would share his experiences.

The CCP had listed Yang Jianli as one of the
49 people to be refused entry to China, because
of his solidarity to the Tiananmen student movement.

He was already been refused entry
to China previously in 1996 and 1999.

In 2002, Yang Jianli returned to China to fight for the
rights of dissidents to ‘return home’, but was arrested.
In May 2004, Yang Jianli was sentenced in China to 5 years
imprisonment on charges of espionage and illegal entry.
Overseas rescue efforts saw Yang released in April 2007.

Since then, Yang Jianli has tried to enter
HK in 2008, 2009 and 2011, but to no avail.
This is now his fourth attempt to enter Hong Kong.

HK Alliance Chairman Lee Cheuk-yan
was very angry about this refusal of entry.

Lee Cheuk-yan, Chairman of the HKAlliance: “Hong Kong
has lost its independent immigration policy to China.
It has refused entry of significant figures
based on the black list from China.
Of course, we are very mad that the CCP
is controlling our immigration policies.
He has been refused every time.
People like Wang Dan and Wuer kaixi,
who are still involved in the pro-democracy
movement, cannot come to Hong Kong either.
For the 25th anniversary of Tiananmen, this year is
particularly sensitive and hard for them to enter Hong Kong."

Lee Cheuk-yan says Beijing is very tense this year
over the 25th anniversary of the June 4 massacre.
The HK Alliance website was subject
to numerous hacking attack this year.
The June 4 Memorial Museum has
also faced suppression from the CCP.

Lee Cheuk-yan: “The June 4 Memorial
has also met with local pressure.
There are two owners who are claiming to sue us.
We believe there are political agendas behind this.
We don’t know if it is related to Beijing,
as we currently lack evidence of this.
But, ordinary businessmen would not
do things like this with their own money.
Our Memorial Museum does not affect their businesses.
It’s obvious that someone is paying for their legal costs.
We think it is very likely the CCP is
paying it to suppress the Museum."

Zhang Jian: “Now, the entire operation of the Hong Kong
Government is in accordance with the wishes of the CCP.
The CCP’s ideology has penetrated
into all aspects of Hong Kong.
The main reason for the Hong Kong government
to refuse entry to Dr. Yang Jianli was to avoid
any troubles during the 25th Anniversary.
The HK government has absolutely been scorned
by the people for shutting out all democratic voices."

Dr Yang Jianli told the media that after being
rejected four times by HK, he will continue to try.
It is his wish to return to China
and visit Tiananmen Square again.
