【新唐人2013年09月11日訊】在洛杉磯，能夠上南加州大學是很多學生的夢想。但是這個夢想對於離南加大最近的社區的孩子可能卻是最遙遠的。不過，這個狀況正在改變，這個變化歸功於一個叫做NAI（耐）的項目，請看報導。
Helena和Angelo是姐弟倆，每天都一起上下學。但是從9月份開始，Helena的星期六將會變個樣。早上8點鐘，當弟弟在看卡通片的時候，她會去上學， 而且大半天都會在教室裡度過。
而她的媽媽也會陪著她。
蕭茗：“And you are gonna be there?”
Edith Alnader（Helena的母親）：“Of course, we all will!”
如此一來，母女倆的週六將在學校裡度過，這當然是份不小的投入，而這份投入背後的動力就是，有朝一日，Helena有可能成為他們家第一個南加大的學生。這個想法讓她的媽媽激動不已。
蕭茗：“you are going to cry all night?”
母親：“of course, I already want to cry right now, I am so excited for them, I am ready to get them started…”
Helena參加的是南加州大學組織的一個叫做“Neighborhood Academic Initiative”鄰居學業幫助，簡稱NAI的項目，這個項目旨在幫助南加大周圍社區的孩子上大學。孩子們六年級就加入，要在南加大接受6年的課程輔導一直到12年級。每週六他們都要學習5個小時的數學和英語。並不是每個家庭都能把6年312個週六都奉獻給教室，但是，Helena的媽媽說這一切都是值得的。
Edith Alnader(Helena的母親）：“I will give anything for my kids…I mean to get a higher education. There is nothing better for them right now.”
Helena和angelo來自一個墨西哥的移民家庭，媽媽做客戶服務工作，她曾經上過本地的社區大學，但是南加大才是她的夢想。而今年，她看到了這個夢想有可能在Helena和Angelo的身上實現，因為Nai項目擴大到了東洛杉磯，包括了兩個孩子上學的Murchison小學。
南加大NAI課程與教學專家Lizett Ezarate:“This is the first time in the program’s history that we are expanding so we are taking on 100 new students, all six graders from Murchison Elementary School and El Sereno Middle School . We will follow these kids from middle school to high school with the objective to get them in college.”
南加大和周邊社區的互動的歷史可以追溯到1880年。在過去15年裡，參加NAI項目的學生畢業率是99％，並且有83％的學生被錄取到了4年制的大學。Tristan是一名過來人，他從5年級開始參加這個項目，現在已經是南加洲大學會計專業一年級的學生了。回首往事，陪他上了6年學的媽媽感觸良多。
Tristan母親：“it worked, it worked. I don’t regret a day of giving up what I was doing to actually help my children…”
記者：“are you proud？”
母親：“I am so proud.”
南加州大學的NAI項目還將繼續擴展，最終要收錄600名6至12年級的學生。從NAI畢業後被USC錄取的學生將獲得4年半的學費全免獎學金。NAI的其他畢業生還有去耶魯，MIT，斯坦福等大學的。
南加大NAI課程與教學專家Lizett Ezarate:“It is just wonderful because the expectation of students in our community are so low, so every time we graduate a class of students we are proving all those non-believers wrong. We are saying with the right preparation and commitment these student will succeed just like anyone else.”
幫助與分享是NAI的精神，從這些嶄新的NAI成員身上可以看出，這個精神應該不難持續下去。
Helena：“I also would like to help kids to enroll in this programSimone: to be just like you?”
Helena:“yes.”
